The Golden Rule: Feed Less Than You Think
The most common fish-keeping mistake in Qatar — and globally — is overfeeding. Uneaten food decomposes in the tank, producing ammonia that is toxic to fish. In Qatar's warm ambient temperatures, decomposition happens faster than in cooler climates, making overfeeding even more dangerous here.
The rule: Feed only what your fish consume completely within 2–3 minutes. Once daily is sufficient for most species. Some larger fish (cichlids, predatory species) do better with every-other-day feeding.

Fish Food Types
Flake food — most versatile, suitable for most tropical community fish (tetras, guppies, mollies, platies). Flakes float initially then sink as they absorb water — useful for both surface and mid-water feeders.
Pellets — denser than flakes, sink faster. Better for mid-water and bottom feeders. Cichlid pellets are specifically formulated for the higher protein needs of cichlids.
Sinking pellets and wafers — specifically for bottom dwellers like corydoras, plecos, and other catfish. These fish cannot compete for surface food — they need food that reaches the bottom.
Freeze-dried food — bloodworms, brine shrimp, tubifex. High protein, excellent for conditioning fish before breeding. Use as a supplement 2–3 times per week, not as a daily staple.
Live and frozen food — bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia. The closest to natural diet, best for conditioning. Frozen is safer than live as it eliminates the risk of introducing pathogens.
By Fish Species
Tropical community fish (tetras, guppies, danios, rasboras): Quality tropical flake or micro-pellet. Omega One, Tetra, and Sera are reliable brands available at Pet Glow.
Goldfish: Goldfish-specific food only — goldfish have different digestive systems to tropical fish and do better on lower-protein, higher-carbohydrate formulations. Feeding tropical food to goldfish long-term causes digestive problems.
Cichlids (African, South American): Cichlid-specific pellets with higher protein content. Hikari Cichlid Bio-Gold is widely recommended. Supplement with vegetables (blanched spinach, peas) for herbivorous species.
Bettas: Betta-specific pellets (Hikari Betta Bio-Gold) plus freeze-dried bloodworms 2–3 times per week. Bettas are carnivores and need higher protein than general tropical flakes provide.
Corydoras and plecos (bottom feeders): Sinking wafers and algae wafers. These fish need to eat from the bottom — surface food never reaches them.
Qatar Temperature and Feeding
Qatar's ambient temperatures affect tank temperature, which affects fish metabolism. Warmer water = faster metabolism = fish may appear hungrier. Do not increase feeding — the increased apparent hunger is metabolic, not genuine starvation. Stick to the 2–3 minute rule regardless of temperature.
In summer, if your tank runs above 28°C (common without a chiller), reduce feeding slightly — warmer water holds less dissolved oxygen and decomposition speeds up significantly.
