Types of Dog Treats Available in Qatar
Training treats — small, soft, high-value treats used during training sessions. They need to be small (pea-sized), soft enough to eat quickly without chewing, and appealing enough to motivate the dog. Zolux, Bioline and Trixie training treats are popular options at Pet Glow.
Dental chews — designed to reduce plaque and tartar buildup through the mechanical action of chewing. Pedigree Dentastix is the most widely known. For dogs prone to dental disease (common in small breeds like Shih Tzus and Maltese), daily dental chews make a measurable difference.
Rawhide and natural chews — longer-lasting chews that satisfy the natural urge to chew. Rawhide has fallen out of favour among vets due to choking risk from large softened pieces. Better alternatives: bully sticks, yak cheese chews, sweet potato chews — all available at Pet Glow.
Cat treats (don't feed to dogs) — cat treats are formulated differently and too high in protein and fat for regular dog use. Keep them separate.

How Many Treats Per Day
Treats should make up no more than 10% of your dog's daily caloric intake. Overfeeding treats while maintaining the same meal portions leads to weight gain — very common in Qatar's indoor dogs who get limited exercise in summer.
A rough guide for treat calories per day:
Treats in Qatar's Heat
Soft treats and chews spoil faster in Qatar's humidity and heat. Always store opened treat bags in an airtight container. Rawhide and natural chews can develop mould if left out — give them one chewing session and then refrigerate or dispose of the remainder.
Frozen treats are an excellent option in summer: freeze low-sodium chicken broth in an ice cube tray, or blend plain yoghurt with banana and freeze in a Kong toy. Keeps dogs cool and mentally stimulated.
Training With Treats
Use treats to mark the exact moment of correct behaviour — timing is everything. A treat given 3 seconds after the behaviour is less effective than one given within 1 second.
As training progresses, reduce treat frequency but keep using them intermittently — variable reward schedules are more motivating for dogs than constant rewards.
