New Puppy Checklist — Your Puppy's First Month in Qatar

Bringing home a puppy in Qatar? Here's your complete first-month checklist — food, crate, grooming, and what to buy before your puppy arrives.

Before Your Puppy Arrives

Bringing a puppy home is exciting, but a little preparation makes the first weeks much smoother — both for you and your new pet.

Essential Shopping List

Food: Choose a puppy-specific dry food formulated for growth — puppies need more protein and calories per kg than adult dogs. Royal Canin and Hill's both offer breed-size-specific puppy formulas (Mini, Medium, Maxi) widely available in Doha.

Bowls: Separate food and water bowls, ideally stainless steel or ceramic — easier to keep clean and won't hold odours like plastic.

Crate or bed: A crate sized for your puppy's adult size (with a divider for now) helps with house-training and gives your puppy a safe space of their own.

Collar, leash and ID tag: Get your puppy used to a lightweight collar early. In Qatar, an ID tag with your phone number is strongly recommended in case your puppy gets loose.

Toys: Puppies chew constantly while teething — durable chew toys save your furniture and shoes.

Puppy pads: Useful for house-training, especially during Qatar's peak summer heat when very young puppies shouldn't be walked outside for long.

Feeding Schedule

Young puppies (8–12 weeks) typically need 3–4 small meals a day, tapering to 2 meals by 6 months. Always follow the feeding guide on the specific food's packaging, adjusted for your puppy's actual weight — overfeeding in the first year is one of the most common mistakes new owners make.

Qatar-Specific Tips

Heat matters: Puppies overheat faster than adult dogs. Keep walks to early morning or after sunset, and never leave a puppy in a parked car.

Vet check-up: Book a vaccination and general health check with a licensed vet in Doha within the first week — do this before introducing your puppy to other dogs or public spaces.

Grooming starts early: Getting your puppy comfortable with brushing, nail trims and bathing early makes adult grooming far easier. Our grooming studio in Bin Omran offers a gentle Puppy First Groom service.
