Why the Right Carrier Matters in Qatar
Most Qatar pet owners use a carrier mainly for vet visits and grooming appointments. But in Qatar's heat, the wrong carrier can make your pet dangerously hot during even a short car journey. Ventilation, material, and size all matter more here than in cooler climates.

Hard Shell vs Soft Sided Carriers
Hard shell carriers — more durable, easier to clean, better ventilation through grated doors and side vents. Better choice for cats who scratch or push against the carrier walls. Most vet clinics prefer them since they're easier to open and more stable on an examination table.
Soft sided carriers — lighter, easier to store, more comfortable for calm pets on longer journeys. Many have mesh panels on multiple sides for good airflow. Not suitable for pets that push against walls or scratch — the fabric gives way under sustained pressure.
For Qatar's heat: Prioritise carriers with mesh on at least two sides. Solid-sided carriers with only a front grate trap heat quickly in a car, even with AC running.
Size — The Most Common Mistake
The carrier should be large enough for your pet to stand up, turn around, and lie down. That's the minimum. A carrier too small stresses the animal immediately.
For cats: measure your cat's length from nose to tail base, and height when sitting. Add 10cm to each measurement for the carrier dimensions.
For dogs: same principle — length from nose to tail base plus 10cm, height at shoulder plus 10cm. For dogs over 8kg, soft-sided carriers become less practical — hard shell or crate-style carriers handle larger weights better.
Airline-Approved Carriers
If you're travelling internationally with your pet, you need an IATA-compliant carrier. Qatar Airways has specific size requirements for cabin and hold travel. Check the airline's current pet policy before buying — requirements change and vary by route.
Key requirements typically include: specific maximum dimensions, solid floor, secure latch that cannot be opened accidentally, ventilation on at least three sides, and food/water attachment points for longer journeys.
Getting Your Pet Comfortable with the Carrier
Leave the carrier out as a permanent fixture in your home — not just brought out on vet-visit days. Put a familiar blanket inside. Feed treats near it, then inside it. A pet that enters the carrier voluntarily is a pet that travels calmly.
For cats especially: spray the interior with Feliway (a synthetic calming pheromone) 30 minutes before travel. Available at Pet Glow with same-day delivery.
