Popular Pet Birds in Qatar
Qatar has a wonderful tradition of keeping birds. The most popular species kept as pets in Doha include:
Bird Food — What to Feed
Different birds have very different dietary needs. Using the wrong food is a common mistake.
Budgerigars and Cockatiels
A good seed mix should be the base, supplemented with fresh vegetables daily. Avoid seed-only diets long-term — they're too high in fat.
Recommended: Versele-Laga Prestige Budgie, Trill Budgie Seed
Parrots (African Grey, Amazon, etc.)
Parrots need a varied diet — quality pellets as the base (40–50%), fresh fruit and vegetables (30–40%), and seeds as treats (10–20%).
Recommended: Versele-Laga Loro Parque African Parrot Mix, Kaytee pellets
Canaries and Finches
Canaries thrive on a canary-specific seed mix plus egg food for protein. Provide cuttlebone for calcium.
Recommended: Versele-Laga Prestige Canary, Vitapol Smakers treats
Housing Requirements
Cage size: The cage should be large enough for your bird to fully extend and flap its wings in all directions. Bigger is always better.
Bar spacing: Budgies need bars no more than 1.2cm apart. Parrots need stronger, wider-spaced bars.
Placement: Keep cages away from direct sunlight and air conditioning vents. Qatar's air conditioning can dry out birds — consider a light misting daily.
Perches: Provide perches of different diameters to exercise your bird's feet. Natural wood branches are ideal.
Health Issues Common in Qatar
Feather plucking: Often caused by boredom, low humidity or nutritional deficiency. Provide more enrichment and ensure diet variety.
Respiratory issues: Qatar's dust storms (haboobs) can affect birds. Move birds indoors during dust events and ensure good ventilation.
Heat stress: Despite Qatar's climate, birds can overheat in direct sun. Always provide shade and fresh cool water.
